Our Purpose
CUSI exists to generate clear, actionable insight on how Somali cities can function better today. We do this by studying urban systems, testing practical ideas, and advising institutions on choices that improve daily life and long-term planning.

CUSI is the first Somali-led urban institute dedicated to shaping how the country’s cities grow, function, and adapt.
We turn real urban insight into practical action, developing people-centred solutions for cities facing rapid expansion, environmental stress, displacement, and unequal access to services. Our work brings together research, spatial analysis, policy thinking, and design innovation to help build cities that are inclusive, functional, and responsive to a fast-changing environment.
We strengthen the systems that define everyday urban life — land, mobility, public space, basic services, local governance, and the social fabric that links people to their city. Our focus is ensuring that urban growth supports dignity, opportunity, and fairness for all residents, especially those often excluded from planning and decision-making.
Somalia’s cities are navigating profound climate pressures alongside fast population growth and widening inequalities. We help municipalities respond to these challenges by promoting greener, healthier, and more climate-aware urban environments that protect people and restore confidence in public life.
